Wednesday 1 June, 2016 Ruskin Park, Denmark Hill, London on behalf of Trees for CitiesBY INVITATION ONLY

Marking the opening of an horticultural therapy garden in the grounds of the nearby Maudseley Hospital designed and built by Trees for Cities, the charity invited Mel Sutton and Andrew Stuck from the Museum of Walking to devise a mindfulness walk in Ruskin Park for guests to the garden opening.

Ruskin Park has become a key centre of activity for Trees for Cities. Working with the local Friends group they have created a community garden, developed a Sustainable Urban Drainage area, planted new trees including a forage fringe, and looked after many of the established trees in the park.

Like many parks in London, Ruskin offers a variety of settings, which provided a wealth of opportunities to lead guests on a mindful walk and to show them how to walk mindfully. A core element of Mel Sutton’s Mindfulness through Movement programme is to give participants skills to be mindful in their everyday activities, so that they can seek moments throughout their days to be mindful, rather than having to attend a class specific session.

Fortunately the rain stopped just before the event began , with wet grass underfoot and trees dripping from their branches, one had to tread a little carefully…….

Commissioned by Trees for Cities and funded by the Greater London Authority as part of  London Tree Week
