For our December Urban Forest Exploration join us for a walk along Joseph Bazalgette’s Thames Embankment, the first thoroughfare to make provision for street trees in its construction. Heralded as a key public work “the appropriate, and appropriately civilized, cityscape for a prosperous commercial society”, the Embankment was constructed between 1865-1870 and represented an important step in making London recognised as an “exemplary imperial city”, and was one of the greatest, and most expensive public works undertaken in London.

It will be an opportunity to take a close look at Plane trees, London’s eponymous urban tree, their use in defining the Victorian city, their history and the future.

We will be handing out a field notebook and pencils, for you to keep your own learning journal and Paul will be signing copies of his book that will be available to purchase.

Our route begins downriver from Westminster bridge and we will walk eastwards, down river towards Blackfriar’s Bridge (&station). Our route follows ‘evergreen’ London, through the Temple to seek out glades of Dawn Redwoods in Carey Street and north of the Royal Courts of Justice.  Our route then weaves its way through to Lincoln’s Inn Fields, with our end point being close to Holborn.

Book tickets: in advance on-line  £18, on the day £20 Accompanied children free
