A Knocking Bird was an urban e-culture project, based on walking the city and its nature,  focusing on the relation between inhabitants of the city and birds, resulting in a sound walk for smartphones, going along with art performance as a method of  interaction, participation and communication with place/people and as a research for the composition of the sound walk. This process was complemented by the collective exploration of the city and its nature during a European workshop with inhabitants of 15 European cities, collaborating creatively with local inhabitants .

This project introduced use of locative media, social media, new media, participation, sustainability and city experience, in a link between art, nature and memory of inhabitants. The artists of WIT Urban Team went in search of nature in the city through art performance over the period of 6 month. The artists researched stories and experiences of the older residents. and examined the relationship between man and nature in the city via art performance and artistic interventions.

The result was a geolocated sound walk through the city, allowing to explore the city and listen behind the facades in search of hidden nature, listen to the song of birds, to the voices of the past.

The sound walk was availabe from June 15th 2013 to January 1st 2015.

A project by the Cultuurcentrum City Sint-Niklaas with support of Grundtvig, Lifelong Learning Programme, Education and Culture, European Union. Produced by the Milena principle/WIT Urban Team and Escoitar.org/noTours. Curated and coordinated by Geert Vermeire.
