Part of London’s 2019 Urban Tree Festival, made possible made possible with support from Trees for Cities, the only UK charity working at a national and international scale to improve lives through planting trees in cities.

We are delighted to welcome Paul Wood, author of “London Street Trees” and “London is a Forest” to lead a 2 hour walkshop to Explore the Urban Forest.

Urban Forest: Angel to Old Street

Soaring planes and rare exotic trees feature on this walk around the backstreets of Islington and Shoreditch.

Starting at Angel tube station, we criss-cross City Road and weave our way between the boroughs of Islington and Hackney where quite different planting decisions have been made.

The inner city is where the urban heat island effect – a microclimate where temperatures, especially at night, can be 10 degrees warmer than the surrounding countryside – is most keenly felt. Urban trees therefore have to cope with very different conditions to their country cousins and on this walk we will see what that means on the ground.

Paul is able to identify almost every tree as well as providing fascinating insights into the history of urban trees in London. Along the way we are likely to encounter London Planes, Foxglove trees, Olives, Hibiscus and Pineapple Guavas among many, many more.

Meet Paul Wood by the exit of Angel tube station for the start of the walk.
