London Art Explorations are a series of walks investigating artworks displayed in outdoor settings in London, created and led by  Tim Ingram-Smith and Gail Astbury, public art enthusiasts as well as practitioners in their own right.

We’ve adapted to the times and are thrilled to be offering a guided public art tour for all to enjoy from home. The tour will be held on Zoom using Google Streetview, and will be recorded too. It will take approximately 60 minutes, and there will be a chance to ask questions during the tour.

For hundreds of years, London has been a glittering showcase for public art and communal expression. As the city continues to evolve, so too do the commissions and opportunities for contemporary artists from all walks of life to make work for both public and private urban developments. Each artwork along these routes form part of a puzzle that reveal the lives of the people and places who make up London’s network of villages. These guided virtual walking tours weave through and tell the oft untold stories of London’s richer and poorer communities.

Our visit to Victoria and its surroundings streets is led by Gail Astbury.  Discover works by Tom Phillips, Yinka Shonibare, Grayson Perry, Patrick Heron, Edwin Russell and others all on public display as well as a potpourri  of building fascias and facades.

Where we will virtually walk: We begin by Westminster Roman Catholic Cathedral and take a peek inside.  We weave our way from there on a route parallel with busy Victoria Street, visiting Channel 4’s HQ before crossing Victoria Street to Christchurch Gardens, where there are three public artworks.  We turn towards Victoria station, passing the Bluecoat School and visiting the recently built Cardinal Place that is home to a number of artworks.

Please book by 10.00am on Monday 13 April – after booking, you will receive details of the Zoom meeting vie e mail – the email will include a link to the virtual tour. Unfamiliar with Zoom? It is advisable to sign up to Zoom (it’s free to you as a participant) – do that right away. View this video about joining a Zoom meeting. Join the meeting a few minutes before the start time.  Within 5 minutes of the tour beginning, we will lock the meeting, so no one else can join the tour – this is a security measure to try minimise what’s called “Zoom bombing”.

Once on the tour, you will be sent a pdf that will include images of the artwork drawn by Gail and further background information including a hand drawn map, so when restrictions are eased you can retrace the tour.
