Art Explorations are a series of walks investigating artworks displayed in outdoor settings in London and beyond, created and led by Gail Astbury, public art enthusiast as well as a practitioner in her own right.

We’ve adapted to the times and are thrilled to be offering a guided public art tour for all to enjoy from home. The tour will be held on Zoom using Google Streetview, and will be recorded too. It will take approximately 60 minutes, and there will be a chance to ask questions during
the tour.

Before researching our previous 12 Art Explorations on line, Gail Astbury was certain that women were under-represented in the number of public art works that are commissioned.  So she has devised a tour that looks at Women and Public Art, taking examples of works that are on display around the world.

Perhaps the best known, early example of public art created by women, is the Bayeux tapestries.  Post-war Britain when parks were being converted back from market gardens and vegetable plots, local governments commissioned many new public art works, from both men and women, but in the latter half of the twentieth century, commissions of women artists fell again.  Does the 21st century beckon a new dawn for women and public art? From Gail’s discoveries the proportion of works being commissioned from women is increasing with many fine examples, as this tour will reveal.

The virtual tour takes around an hour and there will be opportunities to chat en route.
