The Museum of Walking is delighted to announce the launch of LDN_Labels creative adventures in which you get to reveal, catalogue [map] and choose how London is labelled.

The iconic tube insignia tells you you are in London, but how else is London labelled?  On this creative walk-shop (a walking workshop) you will:  explore the many ways London is labelled; img_7407record and choose which labels to keep; modify and make labels of your own. All materials supplied.

In whatever direction you look, you can’t help but see advertising and road signs, but as retailers joust for your attention, there’s more to London’s labels than first meets the eye. Before neon and digital displays, people wanting to grab your attention, carved, etched, scratched, painted and embossed signs, labels, blinds, shutters, windows, doors, porches, pavements, walls and whole buildings. img_7399

Street names and numbers, signs of status or power, bollards, gates and innumerable railingsimg_7397 mark someone’s territory, and on this walkshop you will discover many of these, catalogue them and choose which should remain!  We know you canimg_7398 do better, so we give the tools to create your own and get out labelling London.

Starting at Russell Square tube station, you will weave a route through the one time Boroughs of Holborn and St Pancras, in east Bloomsbury, calling in on the Calthorpe Garden cafe for a well-earned cuppa.
